The diagram below shows the HP-1100 in the trap/wash mode (column #1 selected).  Protein sample from the autosampler is flushed onto the trap column.  Salts and other contaminants are not retained and are diverted to waste.

HP1100 trap-wash:


In the elute mode (column #2 selected), sample previously retained on the trapping column in backflushed onto the analytical column.  Sample is eluted during the course of a gradient program.
